Horse Feathers and Department of Eagles: repeating old stuff and newer versions of old stuff
I saw my favorite I'm-kinda-done-with-Iron-&-Wine-but-I-still-dig-that-hushed-and-falsettoed-voice-and-guitar-stuff artist Horse Feathers last week and got two friends hooked on them. I had gone to the little bar they played at here in Madison a few hours before the show, and sure enough they were there doing a soundcheck. I really wanted to stay for the entire thing, but I felt kinda creepy, since I was the only one besides lead feather Justin Ringle and his two troubadors Heather Broderick [squatting skirted, on cello] and Nathan Crockett [killing it on the saw, doesn't even look old enough to drive] and the sound guy. [sidenote: is it just me or don't their names sound just a little Dickensian?]
So anyway, I watched them play a few songs during that soundcheck, pretending the whole time they were playing just for me, and then I went home, listened to some more, and returned to the show, friends-cum-HF-fans in tote. And after the awesome show [I'm not a show reviewer, sorry], I went back home and listened to more.
But thanks to the show, as it usually happens after seeing an artist live, I have a few new favorites, and it's those I'm going to share with you. All of these below can be found on either of HF's two albums, 2006's Words Are Dead, or this year's House With No Name. You'll need both.

I'm So Excited: new albums!
Just tonight I procured two of the most highly-anticipated albums of the year.
First, Department of Eagles' In Ear Park. I've been dying to get some new DoE material ever since first hearing the amazing "No One Does it Like You" about a year ago. Then came along Daniel Rossen's cover of JoJo's "Too Little Too Late" which was equally beautiful [I'm pretty sure it was mentioned somewhere in my FaveSongs2007 series-- yep, sure did-- right here]. You can purchase both songs on a 7" vinyl piece somewhere, I just forget where. If I remember, I'll let you know.
Daniel Rossen is Eagles' lead singer and mastermind. He's also in the little known band Grizzly Bear. I knew Department of Eagles first, somehow. I stumbled upon their awesome "Sailing by Night" while I was dying for any new musics when I was in Saudi a couple years back. "Sailing" piqued my interest because it built slowly, then some faint drum machines were brought in and the song was just overflowing with emotion. Anyway, ever since then they've been on my radar.
Then came along Grizzly Bear and, guess what, Rossen's a part of that, too. Strangely, I didn't get caught up in all the GB hype, but don't get me wrong-- I do of course totally love a few of their songs ["Knife", their cover of the murderous white OJ's "He Hit Me", which was also a FAveSong2007].
Anyway, I'm currently listening to In Ear Park the old fashioned way, like I used to when I got a new record, cassette or CD-- all. the. way. through. I'm not skipping past the couple I've already heard. I'm not fast-forwarding through the boring-seeming ones. I'm not rewinding [yet]. I started 30min ago and I'm on track #8, "Waves of Rye". It kills. The whole album kills. I'm so amazed by it so far.
Second, TV on the Radio's Dear Science. I mentioned that a couple weeks ago, and then [as I mentioned the other day] that post vanished from the internerds. Like I just said, I haven't yet allowed myself to be torn away from DoE's album, or else I'd be geeking out about how much I love it, too. Hopefully.
Check back here soon for an update on just how awesome Dear Science really is.

losing my mind, heart on my sleeve?
Only kinda; only barely.
By three in the afternoon today, I had:
:scored a goal and defended against several possible goals which helped win a soccer championship
:drank a solid portion of five? six? trophy-fulls of beer
:mildly pinked the skin of my arms and most likely my increasingly thinning hairtop area
:gone for a bike ride [ok, so it was just down the street, but after last week's squats and today's game and nightly habit of little sleep, that's a haul]
:got drunk from beer

Pretty productive, especially for me and especially for a lazy Sunnyday. Fear not, friends of Ry: you'll be comforted to know the old Ryan returned after he sobered up and the rest of the day looked a little like this:
2.55-3pm: was literally on my out the door, schoolwork on shoulder, to meet a friend in the park when I received a message that she had to leave
3-5pm: spent way too much time remixing a song which was really unnecessary in the end
5-7pm: weekly blog catch-up and music downloads, and light online self-promotion
7-8pm: got a little hazy after 7pm, and all time began to blendblurshift into one big.... period
Wha? It's after 9? Oops. Going to study now. [edit: ........going now!]
In the meantime, these songs have kept me sane and perpetually drive my passion/love of/for/ music. Most for at least a few years, and the most recent for several months. No guilty pleasure here; no shame. Hopefully some or all are new to you and I'll have opened your mind, so that when you lose it later on, you can put these on and regain your sanity. Even if you think you know it, or think you don't like it, I beg you to try. The delete key allows for easy forgetting of a disliked song, but there's no key for plain and simple goodfeelingness through good music.
I don't ask much of you; read these words:
Toto - Africa
Last autumn I came to the conclusion that this is most likely my absolute favorite song of the 80s. It's awesome to remember hearing a song this old, around the time when it was popular, even after you realize what that entails.
Wheatus - A Little Respect
This is the killer cover of Erasure's also awesome tune. I think it first appeared on some teen movie in the 90s.
Roots Manuva - Movements
Roots Manuva is a British hip hop emcee, and this song is of the utmost and sublime chillage as far as hip hop goes [I even put it on one of my old chill/lounge mixtapes!]. My point: don't hate cause you see hip hop; hate only [and IF] after you listen and don't like. This record was one of the very first I bought when I got into the whole DJ gig. I didn't really know what it was, but the idea of British hip hop sounded really cool. Despite him speaking the same language [basically] a lot is lost in translation, cause like he rhyme wit mad slang.
Nine Inch Nails - All the Love in the World
No shit, this song does something indescribable to me every time I listen to it. It's one of the few songs I can do what my good buddy Paul does to every single song he likes-- put it on repeat, repeat, repeat, listening to e v e r y s i n g l e synthetic kick drum, wao wao of the bass, piano chord, strained vocal chord, e v e r y s i n g l e m o m e n t . Only difference between Paul and I is that I've yet to tire of it, two or three years on.
National - The Geese of Beverly Road
I only sorta know what the closing lines of this song mean [Come, come be my waitress tonight / serve me the sky with a big slice of lemon], but I love singing them over and over, and I often yearn for an emotional moment as an excuse to really shed everything and step into this song, with all of me. Even if it's not really applicable to whatever the hell my emotional moment is about.

I think I may have posted this last year as part of my FaveSongs thread, but even if I did it probably expired. DoEagles have a new album coming out sometime soon, and it's already way overdue. Their first album was a little hard to sink into, because it was a little too all-over-the-place. If this song is a sign of their change, as it's like nothing else they've done as a band*, then I really don't want to wait any longer.
*I say that because lead crooner Daniel Rossen's solo cover of Jo Jo's "Too Little Too Late" is similar in its sheer vocal awesomeness; right-click d/l it here
I'll slap the bacon out your mouth, dance upon your sarnie....

Beirut Still Rocking My Mind
Something made me check out Takeaway Shows this morning, and I'm glad I did. There's a lot of new stuff since I last visited, to include recent favorites Beirut. I've always [well, since I first heard it a few weeks ago] thoroughly enjoyed "The Penalty" [mp3], but this live version made me enjoy it so much more, and now I think it's probably my favorite. Other album standout "Nantes" is rendered as well.
Also, check out latest TaShows offering by Department of Eagles. I first heard "Sailing by Night" while I was in the desert last year, but I must have listened to it more than a hundred times in those few months. They have a new album coming out, and I'm actually pretty excited for it. "Sailing" [still my fave of theirs] and the new "No One Does It Like You", from the upcoming album Gold Suits, are both featured. "No One" is fricking awesome, sounding more like their cousins Grizzly Bear.
